People of The Gambia Need Your Help to Control Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease.
Nima Gibba was tragically killed by a drunk driver. In an instant she was taken from her friends and family. Her parents cannot express in words the magnitude of grief with her leaving us at such a young age. To preserve her memory, we founded the Nima’s Wish Foundation in her honor to carry out her wish of helping others.
The foundation is dedicated to helping those in need in parts of Africa, the Island nations and the people of The Gambia, where her father is from. These hard-working people lack basic educational opportunities, medical care and agricultural help. With your contribution, a little girls’ dream can come true.
This is expected to increase to 45 million by 2045.
45 million adults in the area already suffer from Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT).
This puts them at high risk to develop diabetes.
The figure is expected to climb to a whopping 110 million by 2045.
We live in a land of plenty compared to countries like Africa. Just a little support goes a long way, especially since the money raised by the foundation goes directly to those in need, and not to operating costs. You can be sure that your tax-deductible donation in money well spent! Things we take for granted like running water, having enough to eat and the ability to get an education are not available everywhere. Help us make a difference where it really counts.

We are also in the process of building a new training and a community center in Gambia.

Of this region, 60% of adults with diabetes are unaware that they even have it. People with diabetes are at increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD), which is a major cause of death and disability. In fact, people in The Gambia have one of the highest incidents of CVD in Africa. This includes hypertension and high blood pressure. There are a number of reasons why these risk factors that can be controlled or treatable are so rife in the area. Obesity, especially among women over the age of 35 hovers around 50% of the population. According to two different studies, hypertension was also higher for women than men. Tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption and inadequate fruit and vegetable intake were also factors influencing the prevalence of CVD. Smoking among men is the highest in all of Sub-Saharan Africa. Finally, all of the risk factors are higher among urban dwellers than rural populations. It is obvious, and imperative, that the population in The Gambia become more aware of these serious risk factors and the steps they can take to lessen them.
Because of these dramatic findings, we are launching the Nima’s Wish Foundation Diabetes Campaign in The Gambia. Our focus will be to purchase a minivan ($10k) for our Gambia team to use in order to reach out to rural people to diagnose, test, train and educate them about this health crisis.
